We had the pleasure of watching INDISU Dance Theater of St Maarten’s Moana this weekend.
Co-director Susha Hien explained the choice of Moana as obvious and drew parallels between the strength of Moana and the people of St Maarten in the wake of hurricane Irma. In Moana, the island of Motunui faced an impossible challenge in the form of a dark curse. They overcame through determination and resilience.
The Dance Theater studios were damaged during Hurricane Irma. However, they started rehearsing at an alternative location as soon as they could. The show comes together beautifully, and there is nothing to hint that they put the entire production together in significantly less time than usual. The dancers are enthusiastic and talented.
Ihndhira Marlin and Susha Hein, the talented team behind INDISU Dance Theater, have choreographed and directed something St Maarten can be proud of. They have been working tirelessly with the youth of St Maarten for generations to ensure that dance, culture, and the arts, are well represented.
If you haven’t already, go see the show! Tickets are still available for this upcoming weekend (March 31st and April 1st 2018). The Philipsburg Cultural and Community center is a great location, close to the parking in the center of town.
Bonus points for tasty Bami (served on paper plates) and Johnny cake (served in a paper napkin).
