Living on an island is wonderful, but sometimes we don’t get to see the innovative products and services offered in other parts of the world. As part of my journey towards zero waste, plastic free compostable dental floss sounded like a dream come true. Here is my unbiased review of Dental Lace’s Silk compostable dental floss.
About Dental Lace Compostable Dental Floss
Dental Lace, Inc. is based out of Maine in the USA. They make silk dental floss and package it in a reusable glass container with a metal lid. The packaging is made out of recycled paper in a facility powered by biogas. (Yip, that is the byproduct of anaerobic digestion – AKA composting!) Each glass container of floss comes with one free silk floss refill packaged in a compostable cellulose clear bag. The packaged is shipped to you in a recycled padded envelope that is also fully compostable.
The only negatives in the entire process are the miles the product takes to get to us in the caribbean, and the shipping label. (They even have a vegan option, although it is not currently compostable.)
The floss will compost in 6-10 months in a home bin, and within 3 months in a commercial composting facility.
Dental Lace Compostable Dental Floss Review
So what is silk floss actually like? It is very much like your standard floss, with the exception that it glides smoothly between your teeth. If you have tight gaps, like me, flossing might be your most-hated part of dental hygiene. However, this is a game changer! The properties that give silk its beautiful sheen help the move effortlessly. It also means there are no sharp edges (hello dental tape!) to irritate your gums.
It does break more easily if you get it stuck between your teeth. However, this is rarely an issue for me.
The natural mint flavor is fresh, and the small glass container is perfect for when you need something to take with you. Many other dental flosses use a petroleum based lubricant, however Dental lace uses Candelilla Wax which is plant based.
If you get a chance, try it! Even better, ask your local pharmacy to stock it. Ordering in bulk can help reduce the packaging weight and therefore the carbon emissions necessary for transportation.
Oral Health
Oral health is incredibly important to our overall well-being. Gum disease may increase your risk of preterm labor, heart attack, or stroke. People with certain medical conditions like HIV/AIDS, Diabetes, and Alzheimer’s are particularly susceptible to decreased oral health.
